Our Story

Our story begins with a quest to create a wine that embodies the romance, mystery, and calm that the Monterey Bay area exudes.Upon arriving in the region, you cannot help but be mesmerized by the beauty of the surrounding landscape from the rugged cliffs to the hidden beach coves that draw you in and never fail to make you relax. Let’s not forget about the sea otters, who inspired our name, and are an iconic part of this coastline as they frolic in the kelp beds watching you and waiting for you to find the next hidden cove or gem along this beautiful coast.

PINOT NOIR 2016

Monterey County

cranberry / juicy strawberry / red currant burma ruby peony / green olive / fallen leaves dried clay / pie crust / fresh finish

the land

Pelio is a north-facing mid-slope vineyard pointed straight at the Monterey Bay, where cold winds keep the average growing season temperature lower than anywhere in Burgundy. Aguajito Shale soils are interspersed with sandstone and uplifted seabed fossils.

the hand

This bottling is 100% Pinot Noir Dijon Clone 777. While traditionally yielding very muscular wines, 777 at Pelio it seems to express more balanced and floral renditions, while still presenting some real tannin presence. Fully destemmed for 2016, the fermentation was long, cool, and slow, lasting over a month. Aged in 75% neutral oak and 25% new puncheons for 16 months.

From one of the coldest vineyards in California, Olson is a large sand dune just 5 miles from the icy Monterey Bay Submarine Canyon. A truly marginal vineyard for Pinot Noir, this windswept hill yields small yields of tiny berries. Family-owned, Certified Organic.

the hand

Grapes were rested in our cold room for 24 hours before being meticulously hand-sorted. A native, whole berry fermentation with 60% whole cluster inclusion kicked off immediately. Post-fermentation, the wine was gravity-fed into 40% new and 60% neutral barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration.

From one of the coldest vineyards in California, Olson is a large sand dune just 5 miles from the icy Monterey Bay Submarine Canyon. The Chardonnay clones were selected from Talbott’s famed Sleepy Hollow Vineyard. Family-owned, Certified Organic.

Olson Chardonnay grapes are loaded with powerful tropical and citrus flavors and tons of dry extract, with a counterpoint of bracing adicity that undergoes full malolactic fermentation on its own. The wine “makes itself” in stainless steel and neutral barrels before seeing another 12 months in 15% new and 85% neutral barrels, prior to a gravity-fed bottling. No fining or filtration.

Our Vineyard

Otter Bay wines are created from some of the most vibrant vineyards in the Monterey Peninsula.  The coastal flow allows for ideal growing and perfect temperature shifts, from warming mornings and afternoons to the cooler evenings, which allows the grapes to ripen evenly.  The hillsides on which these vines are planted give the grapes the extended sunlight they need to grow at a moderate pace to ensure their flavor and acid provide a matchless optimal tasting experience.  Our wines are produced in the most ‘hands off’ approach possible. This allows us to create small batches of near perfection.
